About

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

The Foster Institute for Leadership and Learning equips professionals in education, government, and nonprofit sectors with the knowledge and skills to serve their communities more effectively. Through consultation, curriculum development, and targeted training, we help practitioners and leaders navigate the complex human relationships at the heart of public service.

Founded and directed by Dr. Kevin Michael Foster, the Institute draws on three decades of leadership across multiple sectors. As a university professor with appointments spanning Educational Leadership and Policy, Curriculum and Instruction, Anthropology and Black Studies, Dr. Foster brings both scholarly expertise and practical experience in organizational leadership. His concurrent service as a school board trustee and Executive Producer of PBS Blackademics Television grounds the Institute's work in the realities of how public institutions actually operate.

The Institute serves those who serve others: teachers working with students; principals leading instructional teams and engaging families; school boards governing collaboratively while connecting with communities; and police officers and municipal employees building trust with the publics they encounter. Our curriculum development, professional development, and consultation address the fundamental challenge these professionals face—how to build relationships, lead responsively and collaboratively, and navigate institutional constraints while pursuing meaningful change.

We specialize in translating complex organizational challenges into practical frameworks that professionals can apply immediately. Our approach is collaborative rather than prescriptive. We work with organizations to diagnose root causes, identify areas for improvement, and develop sustainable strategies aligned with high professional standards and community values.
